Long Beach, CA - Lighting renovations at St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Long Beach have been completed creating a brighter and more energy-efficient environment for Father Michael Reardon and parishioners. Designed by Bridget Williams LC and implemented by LVH Entertainment Systems of Oxnard, the new lighting scheme received an Award of Merit from the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.
"Too many lights were doing too little work," Williams said. "Innovations in lighting technologies can now produce more light for less money." Williams designed a lighting plan to compliment the church's clean architectural style using hidden and recessed fixtures wherever possible.
The nave chandeliers were relamped from 500 Watt energy-gobbling bulbs to 250 Watt energy-efficient lamps. The bare fluorescent strips above the nave were replaced with dimmable and virtually invisible cove lighting. Smaller yet brighter and more cost-effective recessed-spots replaced the large, lensed downlights that hung over the transepts. The overall result was an illuminating 20 FC in the pews.
Similar techniques were used over the sanctuary or chancel, where recessed spots were installed to create accent lighting, providing an average 100 FC for each liturgical station. At the side altar and devotional station, recessed wall-wash lighting and spots were used to bring out the tones in the wood paneling, and to highlight the statue of the Virgin Mary. Even the large mural on the rear wall benefits from new, low-voltage spots and hidden cove lighting that indirectly light the back walkway.
Finally, LVH installed an ETC dimming system to handle all the new lights. It allows for preset effects, and control over predetermined areas, like the altar, baptismal font and the ambo, for special services. The results are illuminating. According to Father Reardon, "everyone at St. Cornelius is incredibly happy with the work and the brighter, energy-saving environment."
